Lights off. Flashlights on. We had a blast during flashlight reading and chatting with friends in the dark. We did the extraordinary with the ordinary.

We had so much fun learning about geography! We sang the continents and oceans song, we ate glazed donuts to help us remember the 5 oceans and its location, and we cut into cookies to explore the equator, prime meridian, and hemispheres. Then we created our very own continent by drafting our "blueprints" on paper and created our digital maps using Pixie. *P.S. Check out our crazy hair on Crazy Hair Day! What an amazing week! Monday's Pirate Day was so much fun! We got our feet wet with estimation and computation when our classroom transformed into the "Pirate Cove Arcade." Students chose items and computer games to play. Students had to choose two things from the arcade and estimate the sum, find the actual sum, and find out how many points they had left after finding the difference. At 1:50 pm, Ms. Olenych, Ms. Knoblauch, and I turned into witches to perform an epic book introduction to the story Bone Soup. Our bone soup included gum eyeballs, zombie finger lollipops, booger gummies, gummy worms, and marshmallow bones. The students made predictions and connections, enjoyed tasting our "bone soup", and discussed whether Bone Soup was realistic fiction or fantasy. We ended our week with our gummy bear experiment. What will happen to a gummy bear if it's submerged in water for 24 hours? We made a hypothesis, observed the gummy bear before and after submerging it into the water, and made our conclusions: The gummy bear absorbed some of the water, it grew BIGGER by 1-2 centimeters, and it still tasted delicious! edible base 10 blocks Starbursts (3-d cubes) = 1,000 Cheez-its (flats) = 100 Pretzel sticks (longs) = 10 skittles (cubes) = 1 We had a blast using our edible base 10 blocks to determine two different numbers. We practiced identifying our base 10 values and showing our work to determine each number. After we determined both numbers we compared the numbers using symbols (>,<,=) and words (greater than, less than, and equal to). Then it was time for the best part--eating our base 10 blocks! This week's tech! We used Today's Meet to chat about the similarities and differences between Fandango Stew and Stone Soup. Students shared their thoughts about the setting, characters, problems, and solutions in both stories. We ended our conversation by sharing our birthdates :) Check out our conversation by clicking here. We also used Edmodo to complete writing assignments and to respond to reading this week. We are on our way to becoming Edmodo experts! "Today was the best day ever!" -Hanna
Our first Pirate Day was a success! First we met Mrs. Olenych's class in the Learning Commons and watched Caps for Sale. After we decorated and summarized the story using "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" on their caps it was time for the ultimate challenge. Like the peddler in the story, each group was challenged with the task of stacking their caps on their peddler's head. It wasn't an easy task when the challenge was to stack their caps the highest without falling! One group succeeded with stacking two caps! Later in the afternoon, we put on our lab coats and transformed into scientists. We learned that matter matters when it comes to investigating root beer floats! We observed the physical properties of both root beer and vanilla ice cream. We observed its state of matter, shape, size, color, texture, luster, and more importantly, its taste! We all came to the conclusion that science never tasted so good! #tlap #TallwoodES We had an amazing first week of school! We got to know each other by making play-doh representations of ourselves and sharing our creations with the class. We also learned about being kind to others and the importance of thinking before we speak. We found it very easy to squeeze the toothpaste out but very hard to put it all back in the tube using only a toothpick! Like our words, it's sometimes very easy to say hurtful things if we don't think about what we want to say and most times it's hard to take those words back. Then we learned to work as a team while trying to build the tallest free standing structure using raw spaghetti noodles, tape, and yarn. Our free standing structure had to hold a marshmallow on top without falling! What an awesome first week of school! Today I was a teacher and a professional hot cocoa maker! We learned about natural, human, and capital resources by making hot cocoa in our Science Lab! Today, we made a human clock on the rug. If you were shorter than your partner you were the hour hand, if you were taller than your partner you were the minute hand. After practicing telling time on the rug, we made our own paper analog watches. After we decorated with stickers and crayons, we drew the hands on the clock's face. Finally, we met up with friends and recorded everyone's time. Today we were consumers--carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores! Our most popular prey of choice…CHICKEN NUGGETS! :) #tlap This day was filled with questioning, exploring, and a love for science! We discovered that blubber really helps an animal stay warm, oily feathers really help ducks float, baleen plates really help baleen whales catch food, and a bird's beak allows it to catch its prey efficiently. We also measured our growing baby oysters. We can't wait to see how much they'll grow when we measure them next month! |
Ms. Mendoza & CREWWe are readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. We will question, analyze, explore, create, and most of all, we will have FUN!!! Archives
